2. Their use

Hyacinth vases (or glasses as they are called in many countries) are used to force the growth of the hyacinth bulbs. The top of the vase is shaped to carry the bulb. Underneath is the water reservoir for the development of the roots. The bulbs must first take root in a cool place (about 10 weeks), then they will flower within about 2 weeks, and continue to flower for some time after this.

The first picture shows some hyacinths that I forced in my window-ledge.

The litho of the second picture is from about 1900 but I do not know the source. Does anyone know?
